Dear Reader,
"No other treatment for liver toxicity exists."
That's a truly amazing statement. It comes from a cancer researcher – Dr. Kara Kelly – who recently published a study that ALL cancer patients need to know about.
Dr. Kelly's statement is amazing because the treatment is milk thistle – a botanical that's been used to treat liver problems for centuries. And this is where those who swear by conventional medicine (and dismiss alternative medicine) have no choice but to read it and weep: A century of modern drug development has not produced a single treatment as effective as milk thistle for treating liver toxicity.
But Dr. Kelly doesn't have it quite right. In fact, there IS another very effective treatment for liver toxicity – an amino acid known as NAC.
All cancer patients who receive chemotherapy need to know about NAC and milk thistle. And hopefully their doctors will see the light and help them use the only treatments that can protect their livers.

The fixer

Your liver does a remarkable job in neutralizing toxins that enter your body. But the liver can be overwhelmed fairly easily. For instance, overuse of acetaminophen creates a potentially fatal burden.
If a few too many Tylenols can do that, just imagine the effects of repeated chemotherapy doses.
Dr. Kelly and her colleagues at New York's Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center recruited 50 children with liver inflammation. Each child was undergoing chemotherapy to treat leukemia.
For 28 days, half the group received a milk thistle supplement and half received placebo. Four weeks after the intervention period, markers indicating liver inflammation were significantly lower among children in the milk thistle group
Dr. Kelly told HealthDay News that she believes milk thistle will reduce liver inflammation in patients receiving other types of chemo for other cancers. She and her team also plan additional research to determine if milk thistle, taken at the beginning of chemotherapy, can actually prevent liver inflammation from occurring.
I'm going to place my bet now and predict that this mighty botanical is up to the task.

In case of emergency

Now...about NAC.
As I've mentioned before, intravenous NAC has become standard emergency room protocol for the treatment of hepatotoxicity – liver damage due an overload of chemicals, such as acetaminophen.
WebMD (a VERY mainstream medical guide) describes NAC as an anti-inflammatory antioxidant that promotes blood flow and enhances oxygen delivery. The result: NAC saves livers and save lives.
Cancer patients, if you're undergoing chemo, talk to your doctor about preventing liver damage with milk thistle and NAC.

****This is essential treatment for all of us as we are so exposed to chemicals and toxins today.
